Citymuseum Lakenhal Leiden

📍 Oude Singel 32, Leiden 🚗 17 min 🚲 45 min

Leiden's city museum exhibits Dutch art and history with centuries-old and contemporary objects. The museum is located in Leiden's former Lakenhal, which translates to "cloth hall".

Textile trade

The Lakenhal is a beautifully restored 17th-century building bringing the city's rich textile past to life. In fact, fabric used to be traded here, which played a great part in this, now controversial, Dutch history period. Nowadays, the Lakenhal is home to an impressive collection of artworks, ranging from old masters to contemporary artists.

Rembrandt

The focus of the collection is on works by Leiden artists, including grandmasters such as Rembrandt. Masterpieces by Jan Steen and Jan Wolkers can also be found here. Besides paintings, the collection also includes sculptures, prints, photographs and historical objects, reflecting Leiden's cultural and artistic evolution over the centuries.

With both permanent and changing exhibitions, Museum De Lakenhal offers a fascinating look at Dutch art history and invites reflection on contemporary social issues.
