History

The AFAS Circustheater in Scheveningen is one of the most prominent venues for theatre and musical performances in the Netherlands with a rich history dating back to 1904. Originally, the building was intended as a circus and was used for this purpose until 1960. In 1991, John van den Ende was allowed to buy the building from the municipality of The Hague for a symbolic 1 guilder with the promise that he would convert it into a theatre. The theatre now has a capacity of more than 1,800 seats and is one of the largest theatres in the Netherlands.

Since the takeover, musicals such as Les Miserables, Aïda, The Sound of Music, The Lion King, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, Sister Act and Disney's Beauty and the Beast have been performed at the theatre.
